Had a need for legs on a new project and an old narsty weather beaten oak bedframe volunteered. The finish had long since sunrotted off, wood bleached and cracking, t'was in pretty sad shape. Put a 4" wire wheel on a drill and gave it 'ell fer many hours. 2 coats of thinned Rustoleum gloss black gave it a hard finish but the grain and cracks jus screamed fer accent. Solution was to glaze it wi' gold waterbased craft paint an wipe it gently off. Bout a third of the way thru the gold wipin' process, have to hold off till it cools off as the gold dries too quick to wipe off We gots 6 months till the Celtic Festival, Wot you got to make our encampment more "Piratey"? 'Ere's another Faux technique ye might find useful. I call it "Burn n Turn". Ye starts off by burnin' the snot out off yer project till there be a nice layer 'o char on the surface. Go easy on the corners and edges as they gets ate up real quick. Then chuck up a 4" soft wire brush in yer period electric drill and buff the char off. Do that part outside arr the Missus 'ill have yer arse. Then warsh the project wi' a garden hose and let it dry off. When dry hit the whole thing with a 50/50 mixture 'o whatever finish ye usin' and thinner. As that dries all the little splintery stuff will stand up and harden. Very lightly sand the splinters and bumps off, dust off the whole project and apply a 100% coat of finish. Works best on softer woods with heavy grain patterns. Mind ye, DO IT OUTSIDE! Ye been warned. Attachments:

Another technique commin' into play is "Rustic Scum". This is where an older project needs a touch up and the newer finish gets a liberal dose of old finish flakes, dirt, mesquite leaves, bugs and rain. You'll be seein' a few examples in the next two events.
(raises a digitus impudius to the wind and rain)
