Have run across evidence of hot air flight 60+ years before the Montgolfier bros made it famous. 1720-26 is well within the Great Age 'O Piracy and I thinks we should investigate usin' said devices in appropriate events. Back in me grade school days (go back...WAAY back...) there was a yearly event where the classes would construct tissue paper balloons @18-24" which was then launched by the school custodian. He would hold each balloon over a coffee can filled with charcoal briquets for a few swconds then release them. They would float up 20-30 feet and slowly drift off, cool down and drop. There was no heat source on the balloon therefore no fire hazard. Tis a way to bring obscure history to the Mundane world and have something fun to do. Think China and Japan have similar festivals goin' back hundreds if not thousands of years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartolomeu_de_Gusm%C3%A3oSays Barto was fearin' for his life after makin' his flight, Inquisition bein' as it were. Makes him a pirate in good standin' in my book.
