Iffins ya feel ya may have rotten roots, there be the Wikitree Genealogy site Pirates project ta help ya along. www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Pirates . Ain't rightly sure how it works but have traced me own line directly back to mid 1700's. Theres also a function which checks connections between yer bad self and other famous persons, Presidents, Mayflower Pilgrims, ect. Seems to be more accurate than the volumes of misspelled names used to look up "Coats of Arms" at Celtic cultural events.

Found a gaggle of inlaws in an I.O.O.F. cemetery in Oklahoma. Had to look up the acronym cause I was clueless. Found some interesting pics of medals related to the IOOF. They bears the skull and crossbones and other "society" type symbols. Doubt they relates to piracy but the art work is worth copyi,,, ah, mentionin'... Yeah that'll work

Little more diggin' thru their geneology tools reveals a hat trick o' shady charactors lurkin in me past. Got a 13th cousin, 6 times removed in river pirate Samuel Mason (1739-1803). Also 17 and 18 degrees from the Harper brothers. What do it mean... I dunno but it sure sounds neat in a conversation.

Me 6th Great Grandfather served as a Captain with Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys when they took Ft Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War. If ye still be young, question the old folks about any names/relatives they might remember. Can't ask 'em after they's gone.
edit- Further back up this line it pares off and I finds I's a 4th cousin, 6 times removed, from a certain Phineas Taylor Barnum. Yeah! That Barnum LOL.
A note on the first paragraph- The sacking of Ft T was accomplished by rowing across Lake Champlain by volunteers who had refused to be under the command of a Colonial officer. The word "plundered" was used in describing the raids aftermath. I am quite sure King George would agree in calling the insurgents , "Pirates".

Father's side was good ride while it lasted. Peters out in early 1600's as no one knows where me 9th great grandfather first touched dirt. Might be in England, might be in one of the early colonies. Mothers side flatlines almost instantly, ya gets a million hits on Fry and Brown.

Bingo! Richard Biggs III arrives in Jamestown colony, August of 1610 aboard the Swann. Gots at least 2 ancestors who bailed on bonny olde durin' the Great Puritan Migration. Crikey, a year earlier and Ricky B might have been part of the 90% that starved to death at Jamestown.

Sept of 1780 Thomas Brown and Son spend some time in his Majesties brig onboard the "New Jersey" in Hudson Bay. 2 generations earlier Thomas' grandfather George is deported out of Wemyss Fife Scotland durin' the "Killing Years.
Ain't history grand?

GorBlimey, the HMS Jersey DEFINITLY has some history about it. Imagine havin' yer grandaddy deported from the kingdom then being thrown in a military hellhole for not swearin ' fealty to the Crown?

My great Grandfather Olaf was born in Oslo, Norway and became a pirate on the Barbary Coast. One day he sailed into San Francisco harbor, docked the ship and headed inland. When the Navy stopped chasing him, he settled down in the SF Mts of Flagstaff, Az and started the Mormon Lake Sheep war so he could get rich off cattle and sheep. One of his kids went into politics, a less honorable form of piracy. So, I come by piracy honestly.

Ain't figgered out what wikitree means by degrees of separation. Seems like any person of notoriety is about 20 degrees out. Sir Francis Drake, Mary Queen 'o Scots, Elizabeth Tudor and the like are scattered thru there. No, nobodies showed up to crown me like "King Ralph" LOL.

Ain't figgered out what wikitree means by degrees of separation. It means that George was related to Phil who was related to Carl who was related to Mike who was related to Harry who was related to someone (we don't know who) was related to you. It is a joke where they find six people related to are descended from or slept with someone famous... then they add "someone who is related to you" but they NEVER give you that name so you never learn who or how you are related to that person.

17 degrees into me past this poor bloke had the misfortune to be ransomed by a Pirate- "In 1449, Harry, his wife and daughter Elizabeth were held hostage by a Breton pirate, Colyn Dolphin, and ransomed for 1000 marks, which was paid by his father.[1] The family covered this ransom by sale of "two Manours in Oxfordshire, the Castle and Manour of Rogerstown, call'd in Welsh Tre Gwillin, in the Parish of Baselek, together with the Lordship of Sutton in Monmouthshire." Seems he might have been someone of Nobility but the coat of arms is a mismash 'o mixed quarters, marriages and divided loyalties. 'Tis wot it 'tis though. Attachments:

Found another account 'o Sir Harry's encounter wi' Capt Dolphin- www.piratewalks.co.uk/pirates-people . Needs ta scroll down a bit, there be many more important Pirates from the area. Also found some twists in Mumsy's tree. Seems Great Granny was 1st gen from Bavaria. Grandpa's side filtered in from the Netherlands. Ain't found no connection whatsoever wi' Eire as ey was often told otherwise.
